Crawford Estate Fire

The Oregonian, 10-18-1964:
“A new home development, Montmore, on a 40-acre estate below SW Patton Road and Portland Heights, is underway … The site is the former estate of John Crawford, lumberman … The Crawford mansion was destroyed by a fire in November 1958 … It was never rebuilt.”

The 11-30-1958 Oregonian had a long, front-page, head-line story about the Crawford Estate at 4330 SW Patton Road. The lead sentence went:

“One of Portland’s finest homes, the luxurious West Hills mansion of lumberman John Crawford, 4330 SW Patton Rd., burned almost to the ground Saturday in a spectacular pre-down fire.”

The next sentence went:

“Portland firemen, paying a ‘courtesy’ call in the unprotected Valley View water district, were still at the scene putting water on the last of the flames at 10 a.m., four hours after the first alarm was turned in. Loss was estimated at $100,000 by Portland fire bureau officials.”

The article included five photos of the fire.
