Emergency Communication Node:

In an emergency, Bridlemile’s emergency communication node is in Hamilton Park. This is a local place to go after a major earthquake, to ask for emergency assistance if telephone service is down or report severe damage or injury.

In an emergency, volunteers will set up (hopefully within 24 to 48 hours) at the Hamilton Park site a communications node that will link with the Skyline Fire Station. That is with Portland Fire Station #16.

Volunteers use it to communicate (in order of priority):

  • Life-saving information

  • Damage assessments

  • Government employee check-ins

  • Locating lost people

Using GMRS Radio In an Emergency

In the January 2024 ice storm, many Bridlemile residences lost cell phone service and internet for about a week. Also, many roads were impassable. In such a situation, an alternative way to trade information about what is happening is to use a General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) radio.

GMRS radios are simpler to use than amateur ham radios and have longer distance abilities (roughly one mile) than FRS radios.

The plan in Bridlemile is to use GMRS channel 4 to communicate with other locals. In an emergency, the idea is to sign on at either 9 AM, 12 noon, or 6 PM for group chats.

In 2025, the Bridlemile Neighborhood Emergency team tries to have a GMRS radio check in at 6:45 PM on the first Monday of every month.

GMRS has a limited range of about a mile. Those living on the east side of Bridlemile, may have better radio reception talking to members of the Hillsdale Emergency Team. They use GMRS channel 3 to communicate. However, we do not know what days and times they plan to operate in an emergency.
