Emergency Communication Node:

In theory, at least…, in a true emergency, like a major earthquake, when you can no longer make calls or send out emails, a communication node will appear in Hamilton Park. Go there if you need to ask for emergency assistance or to report severe damage or injury.

In such an emergency, volunteers will set up (hopefully within 24 to 48 hours) at the Hamilton Park tennis courts (back up site is the Bridlemile School basketball court) a communications node that will link with the Skyline Fire Station - i.e. with Portland Fire Station #16.

Volunteers use it to communicate (in order of priority):

  • Life-saving information

  • Damage assessments

  • Government employee check-ins

  • Locating lost people

Before heading there, ensure you and your household are safe, check on any vulnerable neighbors, secure essential supplies, and follow official guidance if available. Once it is safe, you can join the team at the node to connect, get updates, and assist as needed.

Using GMRS Radio In an Emergency

In a Bridlemile emergency, use GMRS channel 4 to communicate with other locals. Sign on at either 9 AM, 12 noon, or 6 PM for group chats.

In the January 2024 ice storm, Bridlemile residents lost cell phone service and internet for about a week. Also, they found roads impassable. In such a situation, General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) could serve as a way for them to share information about what is happening, where, and when.

GMRS radios requires much less training to use than does amateur ham radios. They communicate messages over longer distance abilities (roughly one mile) than do FRS radios.

In a Bridlemile emergency, use GMRS channel 4 to communicate with other locals. Sign on at either 9 AM, 12 noon, or 6 PM for group chats.

In 2025, the Bridlemile Neighborhood Emergency team tries to have a GMRS radio check in at 6:45 PM on the first Monday of every month.

GMRS provides a limited range of about a mile. Those living on the east side of Bridlemile, may find they have better radio reception talking to members of the Hillsdale Emergency Team. That neighborhood uses GMRS channel 3 to communicate. However, we do not know exactly what days and times they plan to monitor their radios in an emergency.
